Available Goldens
We do not list all available dogs for several reasons: our dogs come in and get adopted out so quickly,
we may not have a picture, etc. However, we have adopted over 100 goldens to applicants this year,
so please fill out an application
so we can start qualifying you so that your home is ready when the right dog comes along.
Buddy 205-06
This is Buddy. He is a five-year old purebred Golden boy. He has a beautiful red coat and is gorgeous. We think that he was named Buddy, because he is everyone's friend. Buddy has a seizure disorder. He is taking medication and rarely has seizures. After spending months working with a Veterinary Neurologist, we are now also working with a Holistic Vet, to try to get Buddy to a level of medication that will control the seizures as well as keeping him perky and active.
Buddy came in to GRFR weighing over 100 pounds. He had been in an outdoor shelter in Missouri, having uncontrolled seizures, for six months before we found him. The shelter did not have money to take him to the vet and that's when GRFR stepped in.
Buddy now weighs 72 pounds and is active and very healthy. The Neurologist believes that Buddy has scar tissue on his brain that causes the seizures, but he has no active disease. Buddy is a sweet and funny boy. He does not always understand everything that is going on, but he goes along with it anyway. Buddy is completely housetrained, and knows commands. He is crate trained, but is also fine loose in the house.
Buddy is a very happy go-lucky boy. He loves to go to the dog park and lay in the water. His foster mom has been taking him every day and Buddy can now jog with her and the other dogs. Buddy does better when there is less excitement, but in his foster home (with three other dogs who are pretty active), Buddy has adjusted well. He is wonderful boy, but we think he would prefer someone with a relatively quiet lifestyle. He needs medication twice a day, and he loves to go on walks or to the park. Older children would be great. He likes other dogs and cats. His favorite thing is to follow his 'person' everywhere they go, but he is not pushy for attention.
If you are interested in learning more about Buddy, let us know and we'll put you in touch with his foster mom for more information. GRFR does love him, but we'd also love to see him find his forever home.
Lilly 42-08
Lilly is a thirteen-year old female black lab mix. She weighs in at a tiny 44 pounds. Lilly is not normally a dog that GRFR would take into foster care, but you have to read this story. We could not turn her away.
Lilly lived with her elderly gentleman owner for her entire life. She has been neglected vet-wise, as we suspect the owner had a limited income and did the best he could. When he died, no family stepped up to take Lilly. She ended up in a high-kill shelter and her time was up. GRFR could not turn their back on her.
Lilly is as sweet as can be. She wants to be close to her foster mom and loves any attention that a person can give to her. We're wondering if she's ever had toys, as she thinks they are the best things in the world. Lilly has a funny streak of curiosity and enjoys exploring. She loves the kitty in her foster home and has even played a bit with a younger lab. What a spirit she has!
Lilly has been to the vet and does have arthritis, which is normal for an older dog. She is on medication now that helps her get around better. She loves car rides and needs some help getting inside. She doesn't get around very well on stairs, but is fairly mobile other than that. She doesn't exactly run around, but she is playful at times.
Lilly has a second chance at a great life. Are you the owner to give her that?
Austin 29-08
Austin is a seven-year old purebred male. His 7th birthday was just celebrated on February 2nd, when GRFR agreed to take him into foster care. Austin lived with the same family his entire life, until they got a new puppy and had no time for Austin. He was so much 'work' that they shaved him, in the middle of winter, because they didn't want to brush him. He came to us weighing 118 pounds, but we've taken 10 off already and he's still working on it. Austin is a big boy, not obese at all, but a gentle giant.
Austin's first foster mom noticed that he was having problems raising himself up and was whining, like he was in pain. He went to see an orthopedic surgeon and it was determined that Austin has 'bad' knees. He went to see a vet and the recommended treatment was TPLO surgery, which stands for tibial plateau leveling osteotomy.
Austin had his first TPLO surgery on April 1st. He is doing fantastic! He is putting weight on his leg and he is so much happier! We started with one knee and will consult the orthopedic surgeon again to see if another surgery is recommended or not. It's possible Austin would be fine with only one. GRFR will cover the cost of the first surgery at our vet and we would cover the cost of the second one as well, if it was determined it was needed by the orthopedic surgeon.
Rehab after a TPLO surgery involves short leash walks and building muscle and strength back up. The rehab is approximately 10-16 weeks. If you have never helped a dog through a physical condition, then you have never realized how strong a bond can form. The dog would rely on you for everything and the joy you feel when seeing them improve every day makes it all worthwhile. Austin has been through surgery and he is still the happiest guy. He has not a care in the world, except for love. He is looking for his new owner to bond with during this time. Austin has had three foster moms since arriving to GRFR and not one has one bad word to say. In fact, they still continue to rave about how great he is!
Austin is such a sweetie and doesn't realize his big size. He enjoys cuddling with his foster mom and even shares the bed. He gets along well with other dogs, cats, and has lived with children. On the pain medication, he is becoming more active and more happy. He has the cutest wrinkle on his head and looks to his foster mom for approval all the time. Is there room in your heart for this big guy?
Marley 131-07
Marley is a two-year old male golden mix. We think he's 3/4 golden retriever and possibly 1/4 herding breed. Whatever type of mix he is, Marley is super cute and has the personality to go along with his looks. There is something about him that can only be described as special. He definitely has the temperament of a golden. Marley is a real snuggle bunny who loves to be close to you. He is very inquisitive and always wants to know what his foster mom is up to. Marley is very puppy-like in the things that he does and it is adorable.
When Marley first entered foster care, he was afraid of the stairs, but mastered them quickly (he couldn’t let a little fear stop him from seeing what on the other end!) and is now constantly up and down. Everything about him is that way - he wants to learn! Marley gets along well with other dogs and likes to get them to play. He doesn’t seem to have any interest in bothering cats, except when they run and then he wants to play.
As with any young dog or golden, training is a must. Marley wants to learn, he is eager to please, and he thrives on guidance from his foster home. With some more training, this guy will be absolutely fantastic! Marley is an amazing boy that will bring a little something extra special with him wherever he goes!
Hogan 101-08
Hogan is a two-year old male golden mix and such a happy boy! He is always smiling and is curious about everything. He seems to be house trained and has not had any accidents. He will follow people around everywhere and loves to follow his foster brothers. Hogan is a follower and would do well in a home with another dog. He also would love to find a playmate. He is still young and would love to run around and play with another dog. When his foster parents took him to play fetch, he didn't know what to do at first and just ran after his foster brothers when they fetched a ball. Then he caught on and started fetching on his own.
We don't think Hogan has been to obedience class, but he is very excited to learn new things. When you sit down he likes to put his front paws in your lap, probably to be close to his people. His foster home is working on this with him. Of course, bad habits can be corrected with patience and time. He is eager to please and just wants to be with you. His foster home is working on basic commands and just letting Hogan see how it feels to be part of a family.
Beth 95-08
Beth is a 1-1/2 year old purebred female. She gets along well with other dogs and ignores barn cats. We were told that she has lived in a home with children. Beth is a little timid but a great dog. She loves to play with other dogs and feels more at ease with other dogs around. She should definitely go to a home with another dog...hopefully one that needs a playmate.
Beth loves walks. She does well on or off leash. She was probably taught to heel because on leash she does not pull at all and stays right at your side. What a joy to walk a dog that doesn't pull on the leash! Off leash she likes to run with her foster brother and sisters but she never strays too far from her foster mom. Beth doesn't seem to like car rides too much but that may be because she associates them with her recent trek from Kansas.
Beth is totally house-broken. She hasn't had a single accident in the house. She doesn't try to escape when outside and doesn't chew or act destructive when inside. She has not been crated when her foster mom leaves the house or at night. Beth's personality is easy-going and happy. She rarely barks and is not a nudge queen for attention. Her coat is a beautiful dark red and she has the prettiest brown eyes. She'll be a great addition to any family.
Dexter 97-08
Hello all! I'm Dexter!!! I am a male yellow golden/lab mix and they tell me I'm around five years old. This is a perfect age, since I have all the puppy chews and puppy crazies grown out of me but I am still quite spry and willing! My foster mom says I am quite the gentleman and I try what I can to make her smile. She is sad sometimes because she thinks I was always kept outside and didn't have a lot of love and attention. It took a lot of coaxing to get me to actually go INSIDE the house; I shook and shook all over it was so scary! But I am learning it is quite okay for me to be inside where it is warm and comfy! That is pretty cool and every time I come in the house I get lots of 'good boy! good boy!', which is even cooler. I know 'sit' and 'no', which after all are the most important things to learn! I soooo want to do the right thing, and I am easy to teach! I like to sit by my foster mom wherever she is and just wait for instructions. Well....Not instructions so much as petting, which is my most favorite thing in the world! I'll wait all day if that is what it takes. Just one scratch! Yes, yes! Right there!!!!
I get along very well with other dogs, including the Holy Terror, my 12 pound bossy foster sister. As much as she tries to rile me, I'm never rough when I play with her (even if she deserves it for biting my ear!). I love my bigger Golden foster sister, too!!! There are these things called 'katz' at my foster mom's house. I'm not quite sure what they are yet and they are kinda scary so I just leave them alone. My foster mom thinks my gentle nature and need to please would make me the perfect pup for anyone whether they are single or have a family and have other doggies or not! I love going for walks and if you go in the mountains to hike and camp, I would be so lovin that!!
So what's wrong with me that I got into this crazy and wonderful rescue dog life? Well, a long time ago something hurt my eye and since I don't know how to drive, I couldn't take myself to the doctor. Nobody else took me either so now that eye doesn't work, darn it. But I have a whole OTHER eye that works just fine so it's all good!! Most folks don't even notice, but it doesn't matter if they do since I am such a major lover I melt their hearts and they forget about the spare! Let me prove it to you!
Bachus 102-08
Bachus is the true definition of a Golden Retriever! Happy-go-lucky and he has found every sneaker, flipflop, TV remote, and toy anywhere in the house and proudly delivers them to his foster parents one by one. His tail wags excitedly and seems to ask 'did I do good?' He hasn't chewed anything - he just seems to like to walk around with something in his mouth. It's too funny!
Bachus is a four-year old purebred male and he is the brother of Cabela. He is getting along great with his foster brother and sister. We have learned that Bachus is quite the ladies man! He seems to love his older foster sister and has also been caught cuddling between two older girls on the dog bed. He also initiates play with his foster brother and follows them both everywhere. Bachus has been curious of the cats and has lived with them.
Bachus is overweight and we just found out that he weighs 99 pounds!! But he loves taking walks, playing fetch, and swimming so we're sure the weight will melt off with exercise. He knows basic commands and is very well-behaved. He walks great on a leash too. At the dog park, he was the big socializer and greeted each new dog and person as they came in. Everyone fell in love with him! His favorite thing is to squeeze between your legs and have his heiny scratched!
He loves other dogs and since he's been separated from his sister, Cabela, we feel he'd do best in a home with another dog. He is good with children, but due to his size and the fact that he puts everything in his mouth (ie: kids toys) we think older kids would be better. Bachus is full of personality and character and will bring lots of love to his forever home!
Cabela 103-08
Cabela is a very sweet five-year old purebred girl. Her tail never stops wagging. She's a typical golden - walks around the house with as many stuffed toys in her mouth as she can fit. She loves to play with other dogs, but settles down nicely in the house. She went nose to nose with the three kitties in her foster home and basically just ignores them. In her previous home, she lived with children. She walks well on her leash - tugs at first from excitement but calms down very quickly. She also knows all the basic commands and she's very responsive to learning. She really just wants to please.
Cabela would benefit from a home who will commit to daily exercise so she can lose some weight. We think Cabela would do well in most types of homes. Although she obviously enjoys being with other dogs, human attention seems to be what she craves the most. Her foster home has been showering her with attention and she just soaks it up.
Pretty 98-08
Pretty is a four-year old purebred female. She gets along well with other dogs. Pretty is arriving on Wednesday, April 30th, and will be assessed. She is going to a foster to adopt home, which means they are considering adopting her themselves.
Larry 40-07
Larry is a one-year old purebred male. He gets along well with other dogs and enjoys wrestling and playing with them. He has also lived with small children. Larry is learning some basic obedience commands in his foster home and is learning quickly. He's also figuring out how to play fetch, which with young goldens really means they are figuring out they have to drop the ball for you to throw it again. He is a typical happy golden that smiles all the time. Larry is currently in a foster to adopt home, which means they are considering keeping him themselves.
Jake 105-08
Jake is a two-year old male yellow/golden lab mix, but he truly has a golden heart. Listen to this story - last year, the shelter that had Jake started working with rescue. There are a lot of rescue groups out there, but some are not-so-reputable. Their intention is to help the dogs, but they can't always do that. The shelter sent Jake to a 'rescue' over six months ago and they just found out that he's been kept in a filthy barn since his arrival. Once they realized this, they drove back and forth for two days to get him back. We can find Jake a great home with our applicants!
He loves other dogs and is loving any amount of human attention he can get. Given where he just spent six months of his life, he is so happy! That's why retrievers are so wonderful. They have the best temperament and spirit. Jake just entered foster care and discovered balls. That's his new favorite toy! He can't be without one. He is crate trained and sleeping through the night, which is amazing on the first evening. He is such a love and anyone would be lucky to have him.
Samuel 104-08
Samuel is a 1-1/2 year old male golden/yellow lab mix. He's a small guy, 35-40 pounds at most. He follows his foster mom around the house and is curious about everything she does. He is playful and affectionate, but does not demand constant attention. Samuel does really well in the car and hasn't made any attempts to jump over the short fence at his foster home.
Samuel still has the puppy crazies at times and makes his foster moml augh as he runs around shaking and 'attacking' his toys, but he wears himself out and calms down soon after. He gets along well with other dogs and has ignored the cats in his foster home for the most part. If he does get curious and get too close for their liking, he backs off as soon as they protest or run away. He loves to play with other dogs and would enjoy having a playmate in his forever home, but he seems like he would be fine as an only dog too as long as he's given a lot of love and attention. However, he needs to go to a home without younger children, because he tends to play a little rough with his foster mom and hasn't learned how to take treats 'nicely'.
Samuel probably didn't have the best start to his life and can be a bit unsure of some men. He was a little jumpy his first night at his foster home, but after traveling 1,177 miles to get here from Mississippi, he's certainly a bit overwhelmed and confused. He is comfortable in a crate and will go right in with either a treat or an encouraging nudge. He whined a little bit the first night, but calmed down after a couple of minutes once he realized it was bedtime for everyone else too.
Samuel hasn't had much obedience training, if any, but is already learning to sit. He seems very smart and inquisitive and would benefit greatly from a training class. He seems to have had some potty-training, because he will usually let his foster mom know if he needs to go out. Samuel is the cutest, sweetest little guy that really deserves a forever home.
Milo 107-08
Milo is a two-year old male purebred black lab. He gets along well with other dogs. He was given up because his owner has cancer and can't take care of him. He is tentative at first of people and he looks for reinforcement, kind of like 'am I allowed to do this.' He has warmed up so much to his foster mom, but he's still a little shy of the husband so they're working more on that. He curls up at their feet, he's now asking for attention, and he is enjoying belly rubs. Overall, he's a pretty mellow guy.
Milo is arriving on Saturday, May 10th, and will be assessed by his GRFR foster home. Right now, he's in another state but in foster care there. Please check back for an updated bio!
Cassie 118-08
Cassie is a five-month old golden/lab mix girl. She is good with other dogs and super sweet. Here's her story: 'This baby was found running loose near a house. When the dogcatcher went to ask them if it was their pup they said that they got her as a little puppy but really didn't want her anymore.'
As of May 10th, Cassie will have received her first set of shots and one dewormer. Puppies need one initial shot and two booster shots before they should go out into public. Puppies should not leave your home or yard or be exposed to any other dogs unless you are certain they have been fully vaccinated and are older than six months. They should not go to parks or Petsmart or anywhere else until they have their last booster shot, as they could contract a potentially lethal virus.
Cassie would be due for her second booster toward mid to late May and the last in June. Puppies often need a couple of dewormers and we encourage you to discuss this with your vet.
The adoption fee for Cassie is $250 and that includes her spay surgery. The adopter will be contacted by our Vet Coordinator when she is around six months of age.
Cassie is arriving on Saturday, May 10th, and will be assessed by her foster home. Please check back for an updated bio!
Holly 109-08
Holly is an eight-year old purebred female. At one time, she lived with a breeder and produced many championship litters. Now, all she wants is to be loved. Holly gets along great with other dogs. She is arriving on Saturday, May 10th, and will be assessed by her foster home. Please check back for an updated bio!
Nellie 108-08
Nellie is a super sweet and loving ten-year old purebred female. She tested positive for heartworm and is being treated. Nellie is arrival date is not set yet and will need to be assessed by her foster home. Please check back for an updated bio!
Purdee 106-08
Purdee is a seven-year old purebred female. She gets along well with other dogs. She has lived with children of all ages and is wonderful with them, including toddlers. She lived with a cat and liked to bark at it, so unless your kitty likes this, a non-cat household may be best. She is a bit overweight, currently weighing 76 pounds, and will need someone dedicated to daily exercise to help her lose those extra pounds. Purdee has a very sweet, but spunky personality that makes everyone she meets smile. She was a huge hit at the vet's office when she got her shots updated. She really just wants to be loved and to get attention, as all goldens do. This girl is truly a find!
