Harley is a delightful purebred Golden Retriever. His foster mom writes:
Harley is coming right along. He is a great tempered boy who is learning to be a companion and real family member . . . all new, and wonderful for him. He crates easily for those times when he can't be supervised. He will eventually figure out and become comfortable with all of the new things he is learning about the good life here in Colorado. So, of course, he will need your patience and loving guidance and leadership about many things, including the house rules.
Harley is tall and handsome and 7 years young -much like a puppy in an adult body. We don't imagine he has lived in a home (as evidenced by his lack of potty training before he came to GRFR and general unfamiliarity with things in the house like sliding glass doors. We also don't feel that he was treated nicely by men before he came to GRFR. Poor guy -- he ducks when a man reaches out to pet him. He is very sweet to all dogs. We don't have cats so we don't have data there yet. Harley jumps in easily and rides nicely with you in the car. We think he really needs a dog sibling in his forever home to help build up his confidence and to have lots of doggy fun together. Sweet boy!
Harley enjoys going for leash walks though he is still figuring out just how the leash works. You wouldn't trust him off leash for awhile - his recall is not reliable yet, probably because, so far, he doesn't know his name Harley.
As you can see from his photos, Harley is a loving Golden with the sweetest eyes and Golden heart. He will share lots of affection and gratitude with you if you make him your furry family member. "I sure will and I am sure looking forward to meeting you and my new doggy sibling too!"
Swamptee is a sweet, handsome 1 year old purebred Golden Retriever. Please check back for his GRFR bio and new photos too. Swamptee will be arriving on 2/8.
Please note: Swamptee has been diagnosed with heartworm and will be treated by one of our vets. He will need to "take it easy" until the vet give him the okay. He will also need a re-check, at GRFR's expense, after 6 months. You will be glad to know that heartworm is both treatable and preventable.
Kipper is a distinguished Golden boy. He knows all about love and is so happy to be here. Kipper is what his foster home calls an "easy breezy" golden. He's easy going and just happy to hang out and enjoy his family. Kipper loves lying on your feet while you are working at the desk or watching tv. He loves short walks and does well on leash.
Kipper loves to carry his tennis ball or stuffed toy around, so typical of a golden boy. Don't overlook Kipper because of his age, he's a young 11 by the way. Kipper is a special boy and brings such a joyful smile to your home.
Kipper has been diagnosed with lung cancer. If you are that extra special family interested in spending quality time with Kipper, please contact GRFR. Kipper will share all of his love with you.
Hot Rod is great Golden Retriever mix puppy. He is just 8 months old. Hot Rod is cuddly, golden hearted, sweet, smart, happy and sociable with people and dogs alike. He would love to have a doggy sibling but will do well as your solo furry family member as long as you make time for daily walks, other exercise and socializing with other dogs. He has a soft and silky coat and loves you to pet him. And he loves to run and play with humans and other dogs too. When Hot Rod came to GRFR we noticed immediately that his right leg/shoulder was hurting and we did not know why. So Hot Rod's foster family and our vetting coordinator got to work. The answer is not what we were hoping for but, don't worry. Hot Rod will soon be pain free and good to go, go, go!
After many consultations with specialists, gathering second and third opinions, and considering all of the pros and cons, GRFR has decided that Hot Rod will have the very best life as a "tri-pod" dog. You see, when he was just a few months old Hot Rod's front leg was seriously injured by a blunt force trauma. His injury was not treated and could not heal properly. As a result, Hot Rod has been in constant pain with an injury that cannot be "fixed." Hot Rod will be much happier, healthier and more athletic when he is a tri pod dog -- with three legs instead of four. Please do not feel sorry for Hot Rod; he is not feeling sorry for himself at all. Hot Rod is young, happy and resilient. He will recover quickly. In our experience, all dogs, especially young and otherwise fit dogs like Hot Rod, can do very well with three legs instead of four. Hot Rod will be eligible to join Colorado's Tripawd Club. The club's motto is "It's better to hop on three legs than it is to limp on four." To lean more, check out the information, activities and inspiring stories on their super website at http://tripawds.com
You will want to be sure that Hot Rod stays slim and trim so that he does not put undue strain on his left front leg. Much like a person with a knee or hip joint issue; slim is good and overweight is a strain for dogs! You also may want to consider getting Hot Rod a brace for his good front leg in the future. A brace can help support his weight when he is running and playing. GRFR forever families have had great success working with a local group called Ortho Pets that specializes in such braces. To learn more about Hot Rod, you are welcome to contact our vetting coordinator by sending an email via the "Staff" email link at the bottom of our website pages w "attention vet coordinator -- Hot Rod" in the subject line.
Hot Rod is ready to find his forever family and show them how much fun life can be. So, start your engines . . . fill out your application today and our volunteers will be in touch.
Many Golden lovers are not aware of how doomed black dogs like Hot Rod are when they are brought into the average animal shelter . . . even "Black Goldens," as we call our wonderful mixes. Read more on our home page: "Help Fight Black Dog Syndrome" and check out the links too.
