Meet McGyver! He's a handsome and very sweet, 4 year old yellow lab who had to escape from some pretty dangerous situations to be here today! Yes, McGyver is amazing!

McGyver was found literally frozen to the ground, badly injured, and luckily a good person freed him and got him to safety. When no one claimed him from the shelter he came to GRFR, and we know for sure people will be waiting in line to meet him!

Sadly, the shelter didn't treat his injuries but his foster mom took him to the vet when he arrived in Colorado and we have a plan to help him! The xrays showed he has a fracture, however, because the shelter did not treat him, surgery is not an option to correct it. The good news is that we have another wonderful option for him!

McGyver has been fitted for a "hock brace" which will enable him to put weight on his leg, rebuild muscle strength and eventually run, play and enjoy life like he deserves...pain free! He is starting physical therapy and that will continue so he can learn how to use his brand new, specially made orthotic! This is so exciting! Without it, McGyver would never be able to enjoy all the things any lab deserves like taking long walks and playing fetch.

McGyver's foster mom says "in spite of him only being able to put weight on 3 legs, it does not stop him from jumping up on the couch to cuddle"! He is a LOVE and it's hard to imagine the sad circumstances of his past but things are looking up for him now.

McGyver is a absolute doll! He's sweet, gentle and loves every dog and person he meets. Of course everyone loves him right back!

His foster mom cannot say enough good about McGyver!

Yes, GRFR primarily takes in Golden Retrievers but how could we turn away this lovable Labrador Retriever? He will need a special family dedicated to helping him learn to use his fancy new brace, a fairly active family that will be sure he gets the exercise he needs to continue to strengthen his muscles. His new family might need to put a little more effort into helping him but that doesn't compare with the immeasurable unconditional love he will give to his forever family!

Even if you cannot adopt McGyver, we sure could use some help with his treatment so please check out more info on our Special Needs page or make a donation to help McGyver or any of our other special dogs!
